South Africa & Africa
South Africa
There are vast mineral reserves in South Africa and it is rich in gold, diamonds, platinum, uranium, chrome, coal, ilmenite, iron ore lead, manganese, nickel, rare earth minerals, silica, tin, zinc and zircon. There are over 1700 operational mine’s in S.A. employing over 460,000 people and mining 53 commodities. Many mining houses and mining companies utilize South Africa as a business hub for mines in Africa and general African mining projects. South African mining production was valued at R630 billion in 2017.
Africa
Africa has huge mineral reserves, many of which rank first or second in the world. These include bauxite, cobalt, industrial diamond, phosphate rock, platinum-group metals (PGM), vermiculite, and zirconium. Gold mining is Africa’s main mining resource. Many African countries rely on mineral exploration and production to drive their economic growth. In many underdeveloped mines there are significant environmental challenges resulting from artisanal mining, deforestation for fuel use and land-intensive agricultural production.
Mercury used by artisanal gold miners has led to serious air and water pollution in Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Countries that have significant mining operations include DRA, South Africa, Nigeria, Botswana, Zambia, Ghana, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania, Guinea and other West African nations.
Nigeria, Angola, Algeria, Egypt and Libya are the major oil producers in Africa but other countries have reserves as well.
