Australia
The Australian mining industry dates back to the gold rushes of the 1850’s and is a major contributor to national GDP. Australia is a global top five producer of gold, iron ore, lead, zinc and nickel and also has the world’s largest uranium and fourth largest black coal resources, respectively. It is the fourth largest mining country in the world (after China, the United States and Russia) and generates natural resource exports worth $226 billion pa. In 2016 there were over 370 operating mine sites and 2200 quarries. Australia also has significant oil and gas reserves and is the second largest exported of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the world. The environmental sector has over 150 mid to large environmental consultancies.
The Resources 2030 Taskforce report states Australia can significantly increase investment, create more jobs (currently over a million jobs are directly related to resources), improve environmental management and generate greater prosperity via the resources sector. “The mining and resource sector is more important to the livelihoods of Australians than it has ever been” Matthew Canavan – Federal Resources Minister
