Aggregates, industrial minerals and metals consumption has grown rapidly over the past decade in Europe. It is almost self-sufficient in producing many industrial minerals and aggregates but is a significant net-importer of most metals and metal ores. The European metals and minerals mining sector employs over 200,000 people directly in the extraction and beneficiation processes, with a €13 billion Euro turnover.  An additional 100,000 people work at subsidiaries across the world and report to the European based mining headquarters.  Europe accounts for roughly 40% in lithium reserves. Gold is mined in Finland and Sweden. Coal production is about 15.14 million tons but it is rapidly reducing in response to global warming concerns. Sweden has 91% of the continent’s iron ore.

UK

The UK is a global hub for mining, oil and gas and resources. It has 780 million tons of oil reserves in the North Sea. Coal and iron ore mining were the economic backbone during the Industrial revolution. Local mining in the UK has reduced in the last few decades but there are still 2,000 mines and quarries in the UK which produce a vast range of materials. Many major mining houses are listed in the UK and have significant shareholding in global energy, mining and water projects. London has a leading influence in global Environmental issues and there are more than 100 mid to large sized environmental consultancies within the UK.
